Get Hired! How to Land Your First Summer Job
“Can I have some money?”
If you have a teen, you’ve heard this sentence. Possibly today. Possibly twice already.
And here’s the thing. Most teens are not asking because they’re lazy. They are asking because nobody has ever shown them how to get the money themselves. How do you even find a job at fifteen? What goes on a résumé when you’ve never had a job? What do you SAY when you walk into the café and ask the manager for one?
Nobody tells them. So they do not ask. So they spend the summer holidays at home, scrolling and asking for twenty dollars.
This webinar fixes that. No lectures. Just the practical steps, in the order they need them.
In 30 practical minutes, your teen will learn how to:
-
Find a first job.
Where the jobs for teens actually are, and which places tend to hire young people.
-
Write a simple (but winning!) résumé.
Even with zero work experience. (Yes, babysitting your cousins counts. So does the school canteen roster.)
-
Approach an employer.
What to say walking in, what to write in an email, and what to do if the manager looks busy and slightly terrifying.
-
Prepare for an interview.
The questions they are likely to hear and simple ways to answer without freezing.
-
Make a good first impression.
On day one and every shift after.
-
Handle the nerves.
Because the first shift is scary. For everyone.
-
Get along at work.
Making friends with co-workers who might be older, younger or nothing like their school friends.
-
Deal with difficult people.
The customer who yells about the coffee. The colleague who leaves them to close up alone. What to say, and when to tell a manager.
Short, clear and straight to the point. Your teen walks away knowing exactly what to do next.
For Parents
You want your teen to be independent. And you’d also quite like them to stop treating your wallet like an ATM.
A first job does all of that. It teaches turning up on time, talking to adults, accepting feedback, being reliable and getting through a bad day without falling apart. These are skills they will use for the rest of their lives.
But you cannot always be the one to teach it. (Anything that comes out of your mouth is, by definition, cringe. I know. I have three teens. I’ve been there.)
So let me do it.
I got my first job at thirteen, babysitting for the kids in my street. It was the 80s and I was paid $2.50 an hour. (Look, it was a different time.)
After that came Hungry Jacks, Myer, CopperArt and McDonald’s. And every cent went exactly where you would expect: Dolly magazine, a frankly alarming amount of blue eyeshadow, and bubble skirts from Cherry Lane and Splendiferous.
But those jobs taught me how to talk to adults, how to turn up on time and how to keep smiling at a customer who was being awful. I want that for your teen too.

What parents say about Bec's Webinars
Just watched the replay with my 10 year old daughter. It was fantastic, thank you. We had a great discussion throughout using examples she has experienced with friends so far.
Thank you Rebecca Sparrow we also enjoyed the webinar. My daughter has been away from school for 18 months due to some major medical reasons, and is due to go back next week. It goes without saying she is extremely nervous to re-connect with old friends & make new ones. Your webinar has boosted her confidence that she can do it, so thank you!
