There's so much

I want for my kids.

I want them to read and read and read. And I want them to be critical thinkers.

I want them to experience the real joy and mateship of playing a team sport. I want them to find their spark and appreciate other cultures around the world. I want them to be able to cook a decent Sunday roast and put on a load of washing and know the importance of living a life of integrity.  I want them to know they are loved for exactly who they are. And I want them to be resilient – to see the joy in the smallest of things and to realise that whatever curveballs life throws at them, they have it within them to get back up and keep going.

I want all of that

for my kids.

But earlier this year when I sat down and really thought about my parenting priorities I realised it boiled down to one thing. One thing I wanted to be the bedrock of my parenting and of our home.

I want to raise my children to have empathy.

Because here’s what I know.  Empathy which is intrinsically linked to kindness is  - in my opinion - the magic ingredient to life.

Empathy makes school a safe space.  With a culture of empathy and kindness students are unafraid to show up and be seen as their true selves.

Empathy is the honey that draws families together strengthening relationships and setting a tone of unconditional acceptance.

Empathy is the building block of good relationships (with colleagues, with family, with friends) and good relationships boost our happiness levels.

Empathy fuels connection with other people.  And connection is what gives our lives meaning.

In a world that at times feels like it’s getting colder and crueller, I want my children to be a force for good. I want them to be capable of seeing more than their own point of view.  I want them to understand the power of a kind word, an offer of help and an act of service and how it enriches your life in ways you cannot imagine.

So that’s why I created

I’m doing it for myself as much as you. Because while I want to make kindness a priority in our lives – in the day to day it’s easy to push volunteering and acts of kindness to the side in the rush to get everything else done.

As the world increasingly becomes “ME ME ME” I want to start actively putting empathy at the forefront of our lives.

Here’s how I’m going to do it…

You’re about to become an active force for good.

Every month you’ll receive an act of kindness challenge in your inbox and you’ll have four weeks to make it happen and spread a big of magic in your community.  And then I want you to share your experience in a private closed Facebook group.

For just $5 a month (so that’s the cost of maybe one takeaway coffee), you’ll receive a monthly kindness challenge to complete.  From baking biccies for your local police station to writing a thank you letter to someone who has helped you – the challenges will be simple but powerful.

Plus:

The best bit is that ALL of the profits from this club goes towards

The Pyjama Foundation was founded in 2004 to give children in foster care the opportunity to change the direction of their lives with learning, life skills, and confidence.

Alarmed at the statistics highlighting poor literacy and numeracy levels of children in care, and how this contributes to a lifetime of disadvantage, founder Bronwyn Sheehan made a decision – a decision to offer hope and a more positive outlook for these children.

Through a simple program known as the Love of Learning Program, volunteers called Pyjama Angels are matched with a child in care, and spend just one hour a week focusing on learning based activities. Pyjama Angels read books aloud, play educational games, and help children with their homework. In that time, they demonstrate that this child is valued and loved.

Rebecca is an energetic, engaging and enthusiastic speaker who had our students laughing, nodding and participating all the way through her presentation during our Literature Festival in August, 2016. She has the ability to craft her message so that it is easily understood (by teenagers), while making it a fun, interesting and memorable experience. Most importantly, it was wonderful to see a positive change in attitude in the girls who attended. We would not hesitate in having Rebecca come back to speak to our students this year.

It has been such a gift to my students to have Rebecca Sparrow share her wisdom about writing and coping with their teenage years for over a decade. Funny, engaging, wise: she is a rare gem. My only regret is that now I'm retired, I no longer get to hear her speak to the girls. It was always a highlight of the teaching year.

Bec presented to over 220 of QLD’s high-achieving Year 11 students as part of the 2017 UQ Young Scholars Program. Her keynote presentation was an absolute standout for our students, and she received an almost perfect score on our student satisfaction survey! She was hilarious, down-to-earth and a brilliant presenter – the perfect recipe for delivering an inspirational and relatable message to all young adults. I could not recommend Bec more highly!

Let’s be a force for good in the world. After all, kindness is contagious, and the smallest act of kindness can change the world for another person.
