4 Ways To Respond to Teasing & Mean Comments

How do you help your kids handle mean jokes and roasting in school? I’m glad you asked!

Here are four of my favourite responses…

1/  SAY NOTHING
Just don’t react. Don’t even look sad or upset or offended. Pretend you didn’t even hear it and walk away. This is my favourite response because it’s really frustrating and annoying to the person who said the mean joke. They want a reaction and you’re giving them NOTHING!

2/ OUCH!
If one of your friends says a mean joke, you can say something like “Ouch”. This indicates they hurt your feelings or crossed the line. It’s a calm, clear way to communicate hurt feelings without starting drama.

3/ BAD DAY?
If the person keeps going with their teasing or roasting you can say “It seems like you’re having a bad day”or “Somebody’s having a bad day”and just walk away.

4/  I DON’T GET IT
Finally if someone says a joke about you or someone you know, simply look stony-faced and say “I don’t get it”. When someone has to EXPLAIN the joke it takes all the fun out it!

In my webinar – How To Handle Mean Kids and Teasing – I share  practical tips to equip your kids to handle mean moments and roasting at school.

Whether it’s someone muttering ‘you’re useless at soccer’ or rolling their eyes at you in the hallway, this webinar is designed to equip kids with some practical tips on how to handle the mean moments and NOT escalate the situation!

Listen —  at school, at uni, at work, IN LIFE – you’re going to come across people behaving like, well, jerks. The real skill is knowing how to glide around these people and not get caught in their drama.

Please note this webinar is not about bullying but instead about those one-off snarky or mean behaviours from other kids in the schoolyard or classroom.
